Success Leaves Clues

Last summer, the Spelman Student Success Program sponsored “Through the Gates” — a summer success initiative in four cities -- Atlanta, Houston Chicago and Baltimore. The response was outstanding . . .

In Their Own Words

Don't take our word for it. Here are what a few of the participants had to say:

"
Jordan and Elisha’s advice was helpful! I love seeing how other Spelmanites transitioned and handled challenges."

"I really appreciated the authentic first-hand insight on the joys of transitioning to college as well as the things that they struggled with as they became a Spelmanite."

"I liked the Q and A session where I could ask about stuff I wanted, and could hear about what other students asked."

"I loved when Dr. Lewis reinforced the idea about staying true to yourself and your values as we transition into this new environment!"

Through the Gates was created as an online program during summer 2022 to assist admitted first-year students in their transition from high school to college. Through the Gates is also open to incoming transfer students and Pauline E. Drake Scholars.

The summer 2023 in-person Through the Gates program was made possible by the President's Innovative Fund and JPMorgan Chase. The program provided an innovative way to bring the Spelman experience to 140 incoming students, as well as an opportunity to learn college readiness skills and cultivate a sense of belonging for students. Workshop topics included Defining Excellence, HBCU Excellence, SHIFT: Transitioning from High School to College, Purposeful Preparation, and I'm Here Now What.

The Student Success Program is grateful for the support from alumnae and current students who made the events possible.  Alumnae and chapters of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College in Houston, Baltimore and Chicago assisted with securing space, food and decor. Current students residing in the cities served as program volunteers. The Chicago event was sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.
