Who is Considered a Transfer Applicant?
A transfer applicant has completed a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and has attended another college for at least one term as a degree-seeking student. Transfer admission to Spelman College is selective. A maximum of 60 transfer credit hours can be applied to your Spelman degree. Applicants must be in good standing and eligible to return to their previous institutions. Students must have 35 credit hours completed prior to applying to Spelman.
Admission for Transfer Applicants
A complete application will include:
- Completed application for admission through the Common Application
- $40 online application fee (Transfer and Guest Applicants are not eligible for fee waivers)
- Official transcripts from each post-secondary school attended (Make sure you list every college and university you’ve ever attended on your application. Inaccuracies are cause for denial or dismissal)
- Two recommendations from post-secondary instructors/deans
- Official high school transcript
Please Note: Limited space is available for transfer students, and some majors may not be available.
Financial Aid
At Spelman, more than 85 percent of our students received some form of financial assistance to support their enrollment and success. The majority of funds administered by Spelman College’s Office of Financial Aid come from federal and state sources. Students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), as soon as possible. Oct. 1 is the earliest that students can complete their FAFSA.
Transfer Scholarships
Once you have been at Spelman for two semesters, there is the opportunity to apply for endowed and institutional scholarships. We recommend that students planning to transfer to Spelman focus their efforts on locating and securing scholarships through external sources.
Start researching and applying for outside scholarships early and often (try to complete at least four to five scholarship applications each month). Taking the time to research and complete scholarship applications will make a huge difference in how you finance your college education; you can never have too much scholarship money, so be sure to apply for outside funding opportunities.
